Lighting / Luminaire Testing.
Luminaire compliance per IEC 60598; glow-wire, needle-flame, IP and mechanical tests.
About this category.
Overview
Lighting testing verifies that luminaires and lamps are safe and durable in normal use — that they withstand the heat they generate, the handling of installation, and the mechanical and electrical stresses of a long service life. It covers both the fitting (the luminaire) and the lamp installed in it.
As lighting has moved to LED and integrated electronics, safety testing has become as much about heat management and material behaviour as about basic electrical safety. Lighting test equipment reproduces these conditions so a product can be shown to meet the relevant safety standard before it reaches the market.
What Lighting Testing Covers
The checks span mechanical, thermal and material safety:
- Mechanical strength — the luminaire body and the lamp cap are subjected to torque, bending and impact to confirm they withstand installation and use without failure.
- Thermal behaviour — surfaces and components are checked to stay within safe temperatures during continuous operation.
- Material fire-resistance — non-metallic and insulating parts are assessed with established apparatus such as glow-wire and ball-pressure tests.
Related Standards
Lighting products are assessed against IEC 60598 for luminaires and IEC 60968 for self-ballasted lamps; both set the safety requirements that the equipment verifies. Material fire-resistance checks shared with these standards draw on the wider IEC 60695 fire-hazard methods, so a single set of apparatus often serves several lighting standards.
Equipment & Configuration
Lighting testing uses apparatus matched to the product type and the requirement under test:
- Cap torque and bending-moment rigs — verify the mechanical strength of lamp caps and bases.
- Fire-resistance apparatus — glow-wire and ball-pressure rigs for the thermal and ignition behaviour of materials.
ULMEKA Lighting Testing Equipment
ULMEKA Mechatronics designs and manufactures lighting test apparatus — cap torque and bending-moment rigs and material fire-resistance equipment — configured to the luminaire or lamp type each standard requires. The equipment below covers this category; for a specific testing need, the requirements are confirmed at the proposal stage.
