EN ISO 1402.
EN ISO 1402 specifies hydrostatic test methods for rubber and plastics hoses and hose assemblies — proof pressure, burst pressure, leakage, change in length and volumetric expansion.
About this standard.
Overview
Hydrostatic testing pressurises a hose, hose assembly or pressure component with a liquid — usually hydraulic oil or water — to confirm it withstands its working pressure without leaking, bursting or deforming beyond acceptable limits. It is the core proof-of-integrity behind any pressure rating.
For hydraulic and pneumatic components a pressure rating is a safety and market requirement, so it must be demonstrated by a pressure test rather than simply declared. EN ISO 1402 sets out the common hydrostatic test methods used to do exactly that.
Scope & Applicability
EN ISO 1402 applies to rubber and plastics hoses and hose assemblies that convey liquids and gases under pressure. The same hydrostatic principles extend to other pressurised parts — fittings, manifolds and complete assemblies — wherever a pressure rating has to be proven.
Test Methods
The standard defines a set of complementary hydrostatic methods:
- Proof pressure — the sample is held at a pressure above its working pressure to confirm no leakage or damage.
- Burst pressure — pressure is raised until failure to establish the safety margin above working pressure.
- Leakage — the assembly is checked for seepage at the test pressure.
- Change in length — elongation or contraction under pressure is measured.
- Volumetric expansion — the increase in internal volume under pressure is measured.
The exact pressures, hold times and acceptance limits are defined by the applicable standard and the product class — they are not fixed by the method name alone.
Related Standards
Hydraulic hose construction and pressure classes are addressed by hose-family standards such as the SAE J517 and EN 853 series; EN ISO 1402 provides the common hydrostatic test methods referenced across them. The right combination depends on the hose type and the target market.
Testing with ULMEKA
ULMEKA designs and manufactures the hydrostatic and high-pressure test equipment used to run these methods. The pressure range and fixturing are built to the sample and the applicable standard, and higher pressures are available on request. The exact configuration is defined during the quotation stage.
