Self-Ballasted Lamps for General Lighting Services — Safety

IEC 60968 specifies safety requirements for self-ballasted lamps, including mechanical (cap bending moment), electrical and thermal requirements.

About this standard.

Overview

IEC 60968 is the international safety standard for self-ballasted lamps used in general lighting — lamps that contain their own control gear and fit directly into a standard lampholder in place of an incandescent bulb. It sets the safety requirements such a lamp must meet so that it can be used safely in ordinary fittings.

Because a self-ballasted lamp combines the light source and its electronics in one screw- or bayonet-cap body, the standard checks both the electrical safety of the integrated gear and the mechanical integrity of the cap that carries the lamp's weight and connects it to the supply.

Scope & Applicability

IEC 60968 applies to self-ballasted lamps with integrated means for stable operation, intended for household and similar general lighting and fitted with caps that match standard lampholders. It treats the lamp as a complete, self-contained unit — the cap, the body and the gear inside — rather than the luminaire it is installed in, which is covered separately.

Test Methods

Conformity combines electrical-safety checks with mechanical verification of the cap and body:

  • Cap mechanical strength — a torque and bending-moment test confirms that the cap withstands the forces of being screwed into and out of a lampholder without loosening or failing.
  • Insulation and electric strength — verifying that accessible parts stay isolated from live parts and that insulation holds under the required voltage.
  • Thermal behaviour — confirming that surfaces and components stay within safe temperatures during operation.

The exact torques, voltages and temperature limits are defined by the standard, so the test rig is configured to the cap type and lamp rating under assessment.

Related Standards

IEC 60968 covers the lamp itself, while IEC 60598 covers the luminaire the lamp is installed in; the two are often referenced together when a lighting product is assessed, since a complete fitting must be safe both as a lamp and as a luminaire. Performance requirements for self-ballasted lamps are addressed by separate companion standards.

Testing with ULMEKA

ULMEKA Mechatronics designs and manufactures cap torque and bending-moment test apparatus used to verify the mechanical requirements of IEC 60968, configured to the cap type and forces the standard defines. The equipment below covers these mechanical checks; for a specific testing need, the requirements are confirmed at the proposal stage.
